What's this blog really about?

You may notice a variety of topics here - from business, to charity promotion, even to local news, but the primary reason this blog was created was to alert readers to the hostile atmosphere and sexual harassment at The Danville Register & Bee. The readers and creator of this blog want a FULL FRONT PAGE apology in the Danville Register & Bee, plus the disciplining of those individuals involved. Until then, we'll continue to post regular updates. To tolerate THIS kind of behavior by a major media network is intolerable. And this isn't just ONE instance. Media General has been sued nationwide for racism and sexism, yet they CONTINUE to keep the offenders employed. Why? And why am I doing this? TRUTH compels me.

If only one person had done the right thing....

If ONLY one person had done the right thing you might not be reading this right now. If Editor Arnold Hendrix or Assignment Editor Bernard Baker or Editorial Editor Robert Benson had said to Mac McLean, "Shouting look at her tits and I can see her nipples across the newsroom is not only a violation of Media General policy, but using Media General equipment to shoot that video is against Media General policy," and they had disciplined or fired him; we wouldn't all be here.

WHY do they bury their heads in the sand and put up with it when they KNOW it is wrong? Sure, now that 1,000 people have read this blog and asking the same question they're all going to be quick to deny anything like this happened or that they were a part of it - but there were lots of witnesses in that newsroom that day and every one says all three managers looked at it and laughed and said NOTHING. NOTHING. It's almost as though they had shared a house or something at one time and were all old friends....

If Danville Register & Bee Publisher Steve Kaylor had taken action and had DONE THE RIGHT THING and fired Mac at the time, we wouldn't be here. If, when Copy Editor Darren Sweeney had spoken up and said "Panty dropper is inappropriate" and "offensive" and had DONE THE RIGHT THING and gone to Publisher Steve Kaylor and said, "Hey, I'm concerned about this," and IF Kaylor HAD DONE THE RIGHT THING and said, "This is not only offensive, but I'm beginning to doubt your ability to run a newsroom," and HAD DONE THE RIGHT THING....we wouldn't be here.

A series of events, of people NOT DOING THE RIGHT THING, is what has led up to this. WHY did NO ONE contact Media General's corporate headquarters about John Coscia? Why didn't corporate do anything? Why did it take Steve Kaylor a month to fire John Coscia, but not fire Arnold Hendrix? Why isn't anyone doing the right thing at Media General? Trust me - I have emailed the Board of Directors, the publisher, Human Resources....called people, talked to people..THE FACT IS...MEDIA GENERAL DOES NOT CARE. MEDIA GENERAL, BY OMISSION, tolerates and perpetuates a hostile, sexually harassing work place.
