You might not realize it, but the paper carriers at The Danville Register & Bee are independent contractors. They have to pay for the plastic bags and rubber bands and the papers - part of the deal. When a customer calls in to complain they haven't gotten their paper - The newspaper charges the carrier $3. Now - how long are you going to be a customer if you keep doing that?
The carriers know their routes. They don't miss houses. Neighbors "borrow" papers....
Any wonder why the paper recently lost 13 carriers? Look at the want ads from a few weeks ago. They were hiring for every area in the city.....
With gas at $4 a gallon and carriers having to pay for their own gas - they don't get mileage...and they risk ending up OWING the company money - as one carrier did. Even the carriers don't get the respect from management....
